Giant Ibis Birdwatching in Cambodia: Where to See Cambodia's National Bird

Best Birdwatching Destinations in Cambodia: Where to See Cambodia's Rarest Birds

Standing quietly in a dry dipterocarp forest landscape, the Giant Ibis (Pseudibis gigantea) is one of Cambodia's most remarkable birds. It is the country's national bird and one of the world's rarest ibis species.

For birdwatchers, seeing a Giant Ibis in the wild can be a trip highlight in Southeast Asia. Cambodia remains one of the most important places to search for this critically endangered species, with the Northern Plains providing some of the best opportunities to encounter it in its natural habitat.

If seeing the Giant Ibis is high on your birding wish list, Kriel Lodge by Tmat Paeuy Community should be one of the places to consider.

What Is the Giant Ibis?
tmat paeuy, giant ibis

The Giant Ibis is the largest ibis species in the world. Its impressive size, dark plumage, and long curved bill make it unmistakable when seen in the wild.

The species has experienced a dramatic decline across its historical range. Habitat loss, hunting, and changes to natural landscapes have contributed to its disappearance from many areas where it once occurred.

Today, Cambodia is its last remaining stronghold.

For international birdwatchers, this makes Cambodia a particularly important destination for seeing the species while supporting conservation efforts that protect its remaining habitat.

Where Can You See Giant Ibis in Cambodia?

The Northern Plains of Cambodia are among the most important landscapes for Giant Ibis conservation.

Within this landscape, Tmat Paeuy offers one of the best opportunities to search for the species in its natural habitat, with Kriel Lodge providing a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding forests, wetlands and grasslands.

The area supports Giant Ibis alongside a remarkable range of other threatened and specialist birds. A stay at Kriel Lodge allows visitors to start exploring early, when wildlife is most active, while spending more time experiencing the wider conservation landscape.

A visit to Tmat Paeuy can therefore be about much more than finding one species. While searching for Giant Ibis, birdwatchers may also encounter White-shouldered Ibis, Crested Serpent-Eagle, Green-billed Malkoha, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Black-headed & White-bellied Woodpeckers, Rufous-winged Buzzard, Indochinese Bushlark, White-rumped Falcon, Burmese & Velvet-fronted Nuthatches, Chinese Francolin, Indochinese Cuckooshrike, Burmese Shrike, and many more.

Can You See Giant Ibis All Year Round?

Yes. One of the great advantages of visiting Tmat Paeuy is that Giant Ibis can be seen throughout the year. Different seasons bring different conditions and wildlife highlights, but visitors do not need to restrict their trip to one particular month to search for Cambodia's national bird.

November to February
Cooler and drier conditions make this a comfortable period for exploring the Northern Plains, with migratory species also present.

January to April (Best Season)
The late dry season can offer excellent opportunities to observe breeding behaviour among several bird species, while wildlife gathers around remaining water sources.

July to October

The green season brings lush vegetation and active birdlife. Importantly,
if the Tmat Paeuy Community Protected Area team has identified Giant Ibis nesting trees during this period, there can be a particularly good opportunity to observe the species near its nesting habitat. Rain showers are possible, but the landscape becomes especially vibrant and rewarding to explore.

Whenever you visit, experienced local guides can help you understand the habitat and search for Giant Ibis at the right time and in the right places. Staying at Kriel Lodge also allows visitors to spend more time in the Northern Plains and take advantage of early-morning wildlife activity.

Why Is the Giant Ibis So Important?

The Giant Ibis is more than Cambodia's national bird. It is also an important symbol of the country's remaining wild landscapes.

Protecting the species means protecting the forests, wetlands, and open habitats it depends on.

Conservation programmes in the Northern Plains work with local communities and conservation partners to protect important habitat and reduce threats to endangered wildlife.

Responsible birdwatching can contribute to this work by creating sustainable tourism opportunities and providing communities with an incentive to protect their natural environment.
