Departing from Siem Reap (or other destinations upon request), travel to the renowned birding site of Tmat Paeuy in Preah Vihear Province, internationally recognised as the best location to see the Critically Endangered Giant Ibis, Cambodia's national bird, and the elusive White-shouldered Ibis. Accompanied by your personal experienced Chinese/English/Khmer birding guide, you'll visit seasonal wetlands and dry deciduous forests in search of these iconic species and a variety of other Northern Plains birds.


Your tour includes the 2-Night Wilderness Experience at Kriel Lodge, a birding paradise in Tmat Paeuy Community Protected Area. This recently reimagined lodge is an ideal base for exploring the Northern Plains while supporting community-led conservation initiatives.

During the peak birding season from December to April, sightings of both ibis species are highly reliable, with our tours achieving a success rate of over 95%.

For this Birding Tour, you will have the option of an extra visit to the Bengal Florican grasslands on Day One. Please note that you will depart Siem Reap at 05:00 passing first to the Tonle Sap floodplains for a chance to spot this critically endangered bustard, before heading north in search of the Giant Ibis.

        • Transport is in a 4x4 airconditioned car. Please note that in the wet season, access to more remote birding spots may not always be possible - even by 4x4. In these cases your guide will discuss with you the additional hire of a hand-tractor which carries a small fee of $25 per group, per day (maximum 8 persons).
        • When to go: whilst there is the chance to see target species throughout the year, the dry season months between November and May increase the chances significantly.
        • The lodge WIFi uses cellular data, which can be unreliable
        • Tip or gratuity is at your own discretion, please follow tipping policy guidance when visiting the community
        • Ear plugs are recommended for multi-day tours. The sound of nature at night in remote areas can be loud

          • Sun hat, Sun cream, insect repellent, and head torch.
          • Light clothing covering shoulders and knees - this is especially relevant when visiting temples and religious sites. Clothing should not be bright when birding. Shoes should be closed-toed, and raingear is advisable in the wet season.
          • Small denominations of money for incidental purchases. Kriel Lodge has a bar serving coffee and alcoholic beverages. The lodge also accepts major credit cards.
